Test fixture design and CAD

The Primary Packaging team was also responsible for the creation of and updating specification documentation for each pod assembly component. This included the creation of test procedures to evaluate these specifications, and the corresponding fixturing needed to run these tests.

Here are two prominent examples of fixtures that I developed, in this case for testing of the secondary packaging tube that houses the 50mL and 100mL pod assemblies.

Tube closure removal force

  • Tests force to remove the metal cap applied to the top of a tube

  • Prototyped and made with 3D printing from SolidWorks files

  • Base plate assembly bolts onto base on Instron unit and "pushing" fixture is inserted into chuck

  • Extrusions on top of vertical components ensure proper centering of tube beneath Instron chuck

Peel test fixture

  • Tests peel force for adhesive strip applied to top of tube and metal cap

  • Prototyped and made with 3D printing from SolidWorks models

  • Guide rail, ball-bearing carriage, and plastic fasteners purchased from McMaster-Carr

  • Base plate is bolted to base of Instron unit, and Instron clamp attachment pulls adhesive strip directly upward

    • Guide rail and carriage ensures assembly moves as adhesive strip is pulled, ensuring pull angle is at a constant 90 degrees
